MODESTO SOUND INTERVIEW

IMG_8289.jpg

In this podcast, Melanie talks about how she found her path to giving back and making an impact on her community at a young age, and how that informed her path to further education in Sociology. Melanie then talks about facing her immense fear of public speaking by taking a job out of college where she had to speak to the community to help prevent domestic violence and abuse. Melanie kept this passion for helping others while she continued her education and eventually found her way to teaching, where she landed a teaching job at MJC. Melanie also details some success stories she has experienced while helping out currently incarcerated individuals throughout her teaching time.

BOUNDARIES I WAS TOLD NEVER TO CROSS

DSC06595_edited.jpg

I am a daughter of the Central Valley.
I grew up walking the West Side neighborhood tracks.

They remember me.
And I remember them.

The little girl who was told:
"You can only go so far."
"Stop there."

The boundary was right at the edge of my block where the world
beyond was not meant for

I am Rick's little sister.
Even in his shadow, I wasn't allowed.
No, Melanie. You can't go there.
Why?
Because I said so.

From my mother.
From my brother.
From the world.

I always wondered
what was on the other side?
What was being kept from me?
Or were they just trying to protect me?

I never knew.
But I always felt it:
That deep, aching urge
to cross the line.

To go beyond.

Today, I still wonder
not just how to cross boundaries, but how to live beyond them.

These are the lessons from the tracks.

To the woman whispered about in rooms she enters,
Judged for the audacity of her voice
For speaking truth not into silence,
But into the vast, listening ether.

To the woman who chose integrity over approval,
Who relinquished comfort for conviction,
Who walks a path shaped by her own hands,
Unafraid of the thorns that line it.

For living not by permission,
But by the fire of your own knowing

You may be criticized,
You may be cast aside.

But you are not bound.
You are not broken.
You are free.
